A Borgo is a cluster of Italian houses positioned around a castle, a church or fortified abbey. Over time, markets, artisan activities and a new social class, the "bourgeoisie" were fostered there. The result has been the formation, over the centuries, of a dense network of small and medium-sized villages often surrounded by walls, characterised by their commercial and artisanal economy.
